#1102 closed bug (worksforme)

Huawei E160X don't work on F2G nor F2N

Reported by: mihaly.reg@… Owned by:
Priority: normal Milestone:
Component: fon-base-firmware Version: 2.3.7.0 beta2
Severity: unknown
Cc: Hardware: both

Description

Upgraded/debranded a Huawei E160E 3G USB dongle from version E to version X and it does not work anymore with Fonera 2.0G nor 2.0N. The dongle works fine on Windows XP with Mobile Partner SW. Hardware ID: USB\Vid_12d1&Pid_1003&Rev_0000$.... Model: E160X Revision: 11.604.21.15.314

Before upgrade it was E160E Orange branded and it worked with Fonera some old version. Since then I never used it and meanwhile I upgraded to 2.3..0 Beta2. Not sure what's the bug origin: the fonera upgrade or the dongle upgrade.

Update: actually E160X works on F2N if it's configured with internet static ip. Previously I tried with bridge mode and not worked. On F2G configured internet is static ip but E160X is not working.

Done a new test: Huawei E160X connected to powered USB hub then F2G. That worked ! Attaching the logread to see the difference. This situation is not very nice because I want to use F2G in the car, to provide wifi nearby wherever I go. The USB hub will drain more power from the car battery when engine is off. Matthijs, do you see where is the problem ? I would like to have just F2G and the dongle working without USB hub.

Coming back to an old ticket, I think I know what's the problem here.

When directly connection the dongle, there is no mention of the USB device in your logread at all. I think this is because the USB dongle is really an USB1 device, not USB2 and the 2.0g only has a USB2 controller. Normally, a USB2 controller is accompanied by an USB1 controller to handle USB1 devices, but the 2.0g does not have this hardware, meaning it needs an USB2 hub to translate USB1 communication packets into USB2 communication packets.

In other words: This won't ever work on 2.0g without a hub.

I'm closing this ticket, feel free to comment if you think there is still a (fixable) problem.
