Component: other Version: 2.3.7.0 beta1
Severity: major

Description

With Mac OSX Lion, time machine doesn't support a USB disk attached to the fonera. When I try to make a backup it shows this message: "The network backup disk does not support the required AFP features". With Snow Leopard, it works.

  • Component changed from unknown to other
  • Hardware changed from 2.0n (FON2300) to both
  • Severity changed from unknown to major
  • Status changed from new to confirmed
  • Summary changed from Mac OSX 10.7 Time Machine doesn't work with a USB disk attached to the fonera 2.0n to Support Netatalk / AFP (for Time machine on Mac OSX 10.7)
  • Type changed from request to enhancement

Apparently Apple decided to drop Samba/SMB/Windows file sharing support for Time Machine in 10.7, it now only works with the AFP (Apple Filing Protocol). See also http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1191438

To fix this, the Fonera should start supporting Netatalk, which implements AFP on linux. Apparently Netatalk supports AFP 3.3 (needed for Time Machine on Lion) starting from version 2.2.

However, adding netatalk support isn't something trivial, since it needs to be integrated into the GUI and the rest of the system and possibly patched a bit to make the permissions (among others) work (like samba is patched). If we're unlucky, netatalk might als be big (like samba)...

So, this is something Apple broke and can't be easily fixed by Fon. It will most definately not be fixed before 2.3.7.0, perhaps after. Patches are welcome and will surely speed up this feature.

you need to install the package "netatalk" so your "fonera" can talk AFP... Time capsule will work much much better when talking to AFP then talking to SMB previously!

  • Milestone set to Firmware 2.3

A quick look shows that Openwrt provides a netatalk package, which means it should be relatively easy to get it to compile for the foneras.

It probably does need some more patching and configuring to make it play nicely with the Fonera permissions and automounter, but at least the project seems feasible (not for 2.3.7.0, though).

Also, the openwrt packages for netatalk and its dependencies (libgcrypt and libdb47) weigh around 820K (compressed), so netatalk would probably need to be a separate plugin (and then it might not fit on the 2.0g, not sure).
