#1156 confirmed enhancement

Add 3G dongle types from GUI

Reported by: mihaly.reg@… Owned by:
Priority: normal Milestone: Firmware 2.3.8.0
Component: fon-network-3g Version: N/A
Severity: major
Cc: Hardware: both

Description

Could you add in Fonera GUI 3G dongle section some new fields to add custom dongle PID/VID and dial number ? Or a field to upload the config of a new dongle as a file? As reference pls look at TP-LINK TL-MR3420, they have such option in GUI. Afaik their routers are GPL, maybe you could simply copy the code also ? TP-LINK routers support hundreds of modems, I think FON could also do it that way tplink does.

  • Status changed from new to confirmed
  • Version changed from 2.3.7.0 beta2 to N/A

I'd like to implement exactly that in a later version, but only after we switch to a new (rewritten) version of umtsd (aptly named umtsd2).

Thanks for the TP-LINK reference, I'll have a look there.

I had a quick look at the GPL tarball for the TL-MR3420 V1 (mr3420_3220v1.tar.gz, which is really a tbz), but it seems that includes only the code for the GPL apps included. However, the glue code that actually calls pppd and chat and generates the connect script for the modems seems to be missing from this tarball.

I also had a look at the tarball for the V2 (ap123_gpl.tar.gz) but I couldn't unpack that tarball, it doesn't seem to be a valid archive. I'll bug TP link about that separately.

Apparently there was a good tarball on another server (tplink.com vs tp-link.com), but it didn't contain anything useful either...

The new 3G user interface (which is already in SVN trunk) has support for changing various parameters for a plugged in 3G device, which is basically what you want?

#1329 is a duplicate.

Replying to matthijs:

I tried the auto-builds from 7th and 15th Oct. (presumably these are what you refer to?) and the 3G menu failed thus:

bad argument # 1 to 'next' (table expected, got nil) stack traceback:

[C]: in function 'next'

?: in main chunk

?: in function 'load'

?: in function <?:689>

?: in function 'dispatch'

For your info. (although I am sure you are already aware of it) I get the same error in latest build, dated 11th Dec. 2013 (2.3.8.0 Beta 0+ (r2349)).

Looking forward to this being fixed and testing some dongles!

Heh. Turns out I forgot to add udiald to the list of default packages, so the SVN builds simply don't have udiald included. I had it selected locally, so the problem never showed up here. Should be easy enough to fix. Thanks for reporting in any case!

(In [2355]) targets: Include udiald package by default

Previously, the (no longer existing) umts package was included by default. Use the new udiald instead.
