#1309 infoneeded bug

DHCP / DNS problems with Fonera 2.0n

Reported by: jorgefer1@… Owned by:
Priority: normal Milestone:
Component: fon-web Version: 2.3.7.0 (Paco)
Severity: unknown
Cc: Hardware: 2.0n (FON2300)

Description

Hello Matthijs,

David Garcia from Fonera asked me to submit a ticket to you in order to try to solve the problem I have with my Fonera 2.0n router.

The router only works properly when a DNS server address is input manually on its configuration. It does not obtain one from my main router (a Thomson), returning "page not found" errors when trying to access the web. Dashboard works fine though.

The Fonera worked fine for months, then weeks ago it stopped working properly - as described.

I've already flashed several firmware upgrades and reset the router to factory settings, without success.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Best regards,

Jorge Ferreira

Hi Jorge,

apologies for pointing you around between our support systems, but the development team does not have access to the support tracker :-) Thanks for repeating your report here, let's see what we can find out.

First thing, you'll need a developer's firmware. This firmware allows for SSH access to the Fonera so you can run commands and look at the internals. Other than that, the firmware is pretty much identical. See the reportbugs page for more information about the developer's firmare and how to run commands it. If things aren't clear, just ask here and I'll try to provide some more guidance.

After you've managed to get SSH access, here's a few commands I'd like you to run (after a clean reboot of your Fonera with DNS set to automatic, i.e., the broken settings). You can just paste their output in a comment here (don't forget to use the {{{ syntax to keep the linebreaks).

root@Fonera:~# uci export network
root@Fonera:~# ls -l /etc/resolv.conf
root@Fonera:~# cat /etc/resolv.conf
root@Fonera:~# cat /proc/$(pidof dnsmasq)/cmdline | tr '\0' ' '

Also, I'd like you to run the "ipconfig /all" command on a PC connected to the Fonera (provided you're using Windows on it, otherwise the command is probably different. To get a command prompt on Windows, click Start->Run... and enter "cmd" to get a white-on-black command prompt where you can enter the ipconfig command.

Thanks!

Jorge, I've deleted your new ticket and am posting its contents below to keep things in one place. I don't quite understand why you couldn't reply to the ticket, there is no mention in the Trac log of your first attempt. Let's hope it works for subsequent replies :-)

In any case, don't forget to use the {{{ syntax around output, otherwise newlines will get eaten and the output isn't quite readable (the preview button helps here!). See also WikiFormatting.

I've flashed the lastest DEV tarball - the Paco the Alpaca version.

Logged in using Putty, and I get the Paco the Alpaca screen.

I've typed your commands line by line.

Result:

 root@Fonera:~# uci export network

With the factory settings (auto DNS), when I connect to the Fonera by Wifi only, DNS doesn't work - I always get the "page not found" error. But when I connect to the Fonera using an ethernet cable, DNS works fine.

I've connected the Fonera to my iPad, and found out it had a peculiar behavior: at first, it could not retrieve a certain site, but after I connected the router to the PC and accessed that site, it would also show up on the iPad (which makes some sense since its IP would be on the router's cache somehow).

Hope it helps.

Hmm, everything looks ok in the output you give, I'm not really sure what is happening here.

Just to double-check: If you set "192.168.1.254" as the DNS server in the Settings -> Internet page, everything works without problems?

You say that DNS doesn't work when connecting through wifi, but it works through ethernet. Are you testing this with the same client device, or could it be that, for example, you iPad (through wifi) isn't working but your PC (through ethernet) is?

Another comment by Jorge in a new ticket:

You got it right. If I set 192.168.1.254" as the DNS server, it works fine. If I set it to automatic, I get the page not found message.

Results on the PC and iPad are the same now. Once they were different probably due to cache issues.

Jorge, on your PC, could you open up a command prompt (see http://www.computerhope.com/issues/chdos.htm) and run the following commands:

> ipconfig /all
> ping www.google.com
> nslookup www.google.com
> nslookup www.google.com 192.168.1.254
> nslookup www.google.com 192.168.10.1

And could you run the following extra commands through SSH on your Fonera?

root@Fonera:~# uci -p /var/state/ export network
root@Fonera:~# ip route
root@Fonera:~# ip addr
root@Fonera:~# nslookup www.google.com

All this while things are broken (i.e., when the DNS server is set to automatic).

Thanks!

And in a second mail:

I enclose the log. Meanwhile, I take back one thing I said: the ethernet
interface does NOT work either. When it did it was probably a cache thing,
or the fact that I've accessed the web through a proxy. I've rebooted the PC
using just the ethernet card linked to the Fonera and I get the same result:
no DNS.

Cheers,

Jorge

I cleaned up the above log a bit, it looks like it was copied and then pasted back into the SSH terminal, since the Fonera tried to execute every line of the log as a command. I tried to filter out the error messages and undo the linebreaks, but some of the log content got lost in the process...

This issue is still puzzling... All the output you sent looks exactly like it should, except for the part where it's not working...

I'd like to see if any of the DNS queries ever reach the Fonera at all. Could you run the following commands on your Fonera?

root@Fonera:~# uci set dhcp.lan.options=--log-queries
root@Fonera:~# /etc/fonstated/RestartDnsmasq

This sets up the Fonera to do a bit more verbose logging. Then, connect with a PC and try to do some webbrowsing, preferably on two or three different domains.

Then, collect the debugging info with the following commands. Please send over the output of these commands (but try to get just the output, don't paste the stuff back into the terminal. I suspect you accidentally used the right mouse button, which means "paste" by default in PuTTY). Also, if you send the output by e-mail, please use an attachment to prevent your mailclient from wrapping the lines.

root@Fonera:~# netstat -ln
root@Fonera:~# logread

Afterwards, run these commands to disable the extra logging again:

root@Fonera:~# uci delete dhcp.lan.options
root@Fonera:~# /etc/fonstated/RestartDnsmasq

Thanks!

Jorge,

my last comment in this ticket shows some extra debugging commands. I'm waiting for you to run them before I can continue debugging.

Also, let's please keep discussion about this issue here on the trac, not through the zendesk system. On zendesk, only the customer care department can respond, but they won't be able to do in-depth debugging like I'm doing now (and I can't respond through the Zendesk system).

Also, please try to use the trace webinterface instead of replying by mail:
