#1328 investigate enhancement

(3G) Accumulated Bandwidth Reporting

Reported by: chirag.sanghavi@… Owned by:
Priority: normal Milestone: Firmware 2.3
Component: fon-network-3g Version: N/A
Severity: major
Cc: chirag.sanghavi@… Hardware: both

Description

Can Fonera add Bandwidth Reporting and alerting? Many of the new providers have some type of restriction (e.g. FreedomPop?). I want to be able to get an alert before we exceed such limit.

  • Component changed from unknown to fon-network-3g
  • Hardware changed from 2.0n (FON2300) to both
  • Milestone set to Firmware 2.3
  • Severity changed from unknown to major
  • Status changed from new to investigate
  • Summary changed from Accumulated Bandwidth Reporting to (3G) Accumulated Bandwidth Reporting
  • Type changed from request to enhancement
  • Version changed from 2.3.7.0 (Paco) to N/A

Sounds like a useful feature, however it's not so trivial to implement.

Each network interface keeps counters about the traffic usage, but those are reset each time the connection is brought down and up. So, there's a number of challenges here:

  • When a connection is reset, the current total should be added to some running total and saved.
  • When a connection is reset, I'm not so sure if you can still access this counter...
  • When the Fonera is rebooted, the current total will be lost as well. The fonera should periodically save the current total somewhere.

Even when the above is solved, it's likely that the actual bandwidth used and the bandwidth counted by the Fonera might differ (because of extra overhead in the 3G connection). The only truly accurate measure of bandwidth is one given by the provider, but they don't always make that info available in an easy way I guess.

So, this seems like a useful feature, but I'm afraid it's not so easy to implement, so we'll probably not get around to this anytime soon...

Thanks for taking time to review. Yes, I understand that it be hard - but I can wait for it get implemented :).
