Description (last modified by matthijs)

Here are the steps I used to get the Huawei E392 Surfstick LTE 4G working on Fonera 2.0n

Hope it may be of use to you, if you can tell me how to make it reboot and connect automatically I'd be ecstatic

Fonera 2.0n with Huawei E392 Surfstick LTE 4G - sim-free

Step 1 Imaged fonera with 2.3.7.1 DEV

Set IP etc then logged in via SSH and

Step 2

vi /Apps/umtsd.lua

and replace

"OK \"ATD*99***1#\"n"..

with

"OK \"ATD*99#\"n"..

and replace

local data = "/dev/ttyUSB0"
local cmd = "/dev/ttyUSB1"

with:

local data = "/dev/ttyUSB0"
local cmd = "/dev/ttyUSB0"

Save & Quit

Step 3

vi /etc/config/umtsd

#For 3 internet use this or for everything everywhere use the everywhere block

config 'umtsd' 'umtsd'
        option '_country' '_custom'
        option 'apn' '3internet'
        option 'user' 'three'
        option 'pass' 'three'
        option 'dns' '172.31.76.69'

#everywhere block
#config 'umtsd' 'umtsd'
# option '_country' '_custom'
# option 'dns' '172.31.76.69'
# option 'apn' 'everywhere'

#this below I left the same

config 'umtsdstate' 'umtsdstate'

config 'umtsdevice' 'option12D114ac'
        option 'data' '/dev/ttyUSB0'
        option 'cmd' '/dev/ttyUSB0'
        option 'huawei' '1'
        option 'vendor' 'Huawei'
        option 'model' 'E353'
        option 'device' 'E353'

config 'umtsdevice' 'option1BBB0000'
        option 'data' '/dev/ttyUSB2'
        option 'cmd' '/dev/ttyUSB1'
        option 'vendor' 'Alcatel'
        option 'model' 'x200'

config 'umtsdevice' 'hso0AF06971'
        option 'data' '/dev/ttyUSB3'
        option 'cmd' '/dev/ttyUSB1'
        option 'vendor' 'Option'
        option 'model' 'ICON225'
        option 'hso' '1'

config 'umtsdevice' 'option1E0E9000'
        option 'data' '/dev/ttyUSB2'
        option 'cmd' '/dev/ttyUSB2'
        option 'vendor' 'Option'
        option 'model' 'ICON210'

Step 4 Attach the Huawei E392 Surfstick LTE 4G

Step 5 run the 2 commands

usb_modeswitch -v 12d1 -p 1505 -V 12d1 -P 140b -M "55534243123456780000000000000011062000000100000000000000000000" -n 1 -W
echo "12d1 1506" > /sys/bus/usb-serial/drivers/option1/new_id

Connection attained!!

I have to redo Step 5 after attaching / rebooting each time

Cool, thanks for figuring this out. As to making this work on boot, I think you can create a file called /etc/usb_modeswitch.d/12d1:1505, containing:

# Huawei EC156, Huawei E372u-8

TargetVendor=  0x12d1
TargetProductList="140b,1506,150f,150a"

MessageContent="55534243123456780000000000000011062000000100000000000000000000"

For the "new_id" command, you can put that in /etc/init.d/boot (inside the start() function, so it's executed early in the bootup process.

Alternatively, you could try the latest nightly build (see http://blog.fonosfera.org/automated-firmware-builds-from-subversion-available/). These are built from SVN trunk, which has completely revamped 3G support. I've confirmed that the needed usb modeswitch configuration is already present in that version. I'm not sure if the new_id command is still needed, you'd have to try. The other options (command and data terminals and dial string you should be able to set through the webinterface). If this works for you, I'd be happy to include the configuration needed in the official builds so it will work out of the box in the future.

Now, the existing scripts for modeswitching will automatically make sure that the modeswitch happens.
