#35 confirmed enhancement

Hard Disk formatting / partitioner / checkdisk tool app

Reported by: anonymous Owned by: iurgi@…
Priority: normal Milestone:
Component: fon-base-firmware Version: N/A
Severity: normal
Cc: mihaly.reg@… Hardware: both

Description

Since it is recomended to use ext2/ext3 formated disks with Fonera 2.0, an app capable of formatting usb discs with this format would be nice. Otherwise, linux based computer and skills are required wich is not always available for the average non-expert user.

IIRC, mkfs wasn't reliable on the Fonera due to memory constraints. However, this might need some more investigation.

#537 is a duplicate of this ticket.

It does add the request for a partitioning utility as well, though.

  • Summary changed from Hard Disk formatting tool app to Hard Disk formatting / partitioner / checkdisk tool app

#536 is similar, but suggests a checkdisk tool.

Actually, #535 suggets the checkdisk tool, #536 suggests a defragmentation tool (which we'll not include).

the original request was to provide aid in applying ext2/ext3 format to the attached disk.

it should be pretty easy to find out if fonera has enough memory to ext3 format a 1TB usb drive while running smbd, nmbd, openvpn, ftpd running but without transmission (pretty obvious - as the hdd has not been formatted). possibly even some services like smbd, nmbd, ftpd could be stopped before and restarted after formatting if more memory is required.

as i don't have a huge spare usb drive i cannot offer to do the testing.
