#841 investigate enhancement

Force DNS requests to the Fonera

Reported by: steven@… Owned by:
Priority: normal Milestone:
Component: fon-base-firmware Version: N/A
Severity: major
Cc: Hardware: both

Description

The Fonera-productline is the only accesspoint/router that does not have any 'parental' filter features... For a hotspot service that allows aliens to connect to your internet connection this is a big fail!

Perhaps it would be interesting to support OpenDns? FamilyShield? : https://www.opendns.com/familyshield/

At the moment it is possible to add eg the Dns of Opendns... but anyone who wants to use another "dns" server is allowed to do so The IpTables? on La Fonera will not send all DNS traffic to the configured opendns... This also allows people to use DNS-tunnelling to avoid the Fonera Captive Portal

  • Severity changed from unknown to major
  • Status changed from new to investigate
  • Summary changed from OpenDns parental shield to Force DNS requests to the Fonera
  • Version changed from 2.3.6.0 (Gari) to N/A

I'm not sure it is a very important feature, but I'll leave this ticket open just in case.

Note that even if you would redirect all the DNS traffic to the Fonera, a user could still use SSH tunneling or OpenVPN to escape the parental shield, so no solution based on OpenDNS is really foolproof.

But if somebody uses a ssh tunnel or a VPN, at least it is not MY IP that gets in trouble

Why do you feel the need to censor others? I hate hotspots that filter anything "adult", including betting sites etc!

Replying to Fon User:

because all those adults are using an IP address that is registered to ME, if they do something illegal while connected to MY hotspot, it is ME to whom the police is going after
