#850 confirmed enhancement

File sharing user right management (FTP & Samba)

I think it is absolutely important to intergarte an adequate user right management for the ftp server. The ftp server is not useable as it is right now, only offering a master user login and a anonymous login which accesses the same folders.

sorry, previous is mine too... but forgot my email...

i think there should be users, groups and shares/folders

  • users can go in groups
  • groups can get read or write permission on a folder/directory
  • when logging in on FTP or SAMBA a user sees all directories to which his groups have access

so i guess this ticket shouldn't be about FTP but about the USB-sharing in general....

#552 Talks about removing PureFTP patches, which block this feature. It also references this forum thread with info:

#936 also requests anonymous samba access.

Is it possible to get at least the commandline version running? I do understand that the gui integration will require significantly more effort. But at the moment, not even the commandline ftp works, there are major issues with the user rights management. I mean those of us who really seek control over the FTP server would be absolutely satisfied if the configuration would work on ssh. Please consider that.

I see your point, it would indeed be easier to make it possible, before making it work out of the box. However, it's still not completely trivial, so I don't expect this to happen before (this would only delay that release further).

Also, if anyone cares to look into the problem a bit more closely and perhaps provide an updated patch that allows multiple users, but also works for the current case (which I think means it has to map the "fonero" user to root, perhaps make that configurable), this might speed up things.

#1163 requests limiting file sharing to specific subdirectories, which should probably be implemented as part of this ticket as a general, per-directory access control mechanism.

I believe it would be great to set an portrange for FTP too, because I'm having a lot of trouble / a hard time in trying to configure my external firewall to forward to the Fonera FTP, and getting it to really work.

Which Passive ports does the FTP server use?

...or does anyone have the answer to this for me?

I don't have the answer ready, but the Fonera uses pure-ftpd, with this config file:

Perhaps that helps to find out your answer?

If you have further questions, please send them to the mailing list instead, since this questions is fairly off-topic for the trac and this ticket in particular.
