#855 investigate bug

Low throughput using FTP/Windows Networking and USB disk

Reported by: calvinturbo@… Owned by:
Priority: normal Milestone: Firmware 2.3
Component: fon-base-firmware Version: 2.3.6.0 (Gari)
Severity: unknown
Cc: Hardware: 2.0n (FON2300)

Description

I have a Fonera 2.0n with a 1,5TB harddisk. When I put my 1,5TB harddisk in the USB port of my Windows 7 PC, I get around 25MB/s ( MegaByte? not Megabit! ). When I try to copy something from the harddisk that uses the USB port on the Fonera 2.0n its lower than 1MB/s. Very Slow... PC to PC transfer goes faster (network transfer) with 10MB/s. Can you please speed this up so it will be around 7MB/s or higher in the future! I would like to see this in new firmware. If File transfer is already faster with DEV firmware, please respond to this ticket.

Sorry for my bad English :)

  • Status changed from new to infoneeded
  • Type changed from enhancement to bug
  • Version changed from N/A to Unknown

What version have you been trying exactly?

What is the filesystem is on the hard disk? NTFS is known to be very slow, due to the complexity of the filesystem. If you are using NTFS, you should probably switch to FAT or ext2 instead.

When you say that th DEV version is a bit faster, are you comparing the same firmware version DEV vs non-DEV? I can't think of any reason why DEV would be faster.

Are you using an USB hub, or is the disk connected directly?

What external disk (brand/ type) are you using exactly?

Are you copying a big file, or a lot of small files? With small files, it is expected that the speed will drop.

I assume you are copying from the HD attached to the Fonera to a PC? How is the PC connected to the Fonera (directly on a LAN port, through a switch, on the WAN side, etc.)?

I've just run a quick test using my 2.0n and 2.3.6.0, I get around 3Mbyte/s from the LAN side. Still not super fast, but at least a bit faster than your results.

What version have you been trying exactly? You mean which Firmware version of the Fonera? 2.3.6.0 What is the Filesystem? EXT3

I do not say that the DEV version is faster, but i hoped you knew if the DEV version was faster.

I am using the Freecom Hard Drive XS 3.5" USB 2.0 1,5TB

I am copying large files (100MB per File).

"I assume you are copying from the HD attached to the Fonera to a PC? How is the PC connected to the Fonera " Your guess is right :) My PC is directly connected to the Fonera (Directly on LAN port)

Hope this information helps!

I forgot one question: "Are you using an USB hub, or is the disk connected directly?"

USB drive is connected directly to the Fonera's USB port

And a Spanish topic as well (I cannot speak Spanish, I translated it with Google Translate): [http://foros.fon.com/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=5606 ]

Extra information that may help: I searched the tickets on fonosfera and I found similar problems with the Fonera 2. Someone wanted to stream a movie from the Fonera to his computer. It did not work good because the low transfer speed. When he disabled Transmission and restarted the Fonera 2 it did work! Maybe it has something to do with the CPU? I use Transmission as well and have not tested the solution yet. The Read and Write activity from Transmission cannot be the problem.

Greetings

Please add 2.3 as Milestone. Transfer speed is really important for a NAS/Router with USB HDD support
