#858 investigate enhancement
Enhancement: Support USB HD spin-down
Reported by: | thomas.pasch@… | Owned by: | |

Priority: | normal | Milestone: | Firmware 2.3 |
Component: | fon-base-firmware | Version: | 2.3.6.0 (Gari) |
Severity: | minor | ||
Cc: | Hardware: | 2.0n (FON2300) |
Description
At present, hard disks connected to fon2300 by usb never spin down. However, it is easy to change that: by using 'opkg', an openwrt repository, installing (and enabling) 'hd-idle'. See http://wiki.fon.com/wiki/OPKG/fr for more information.
Please consider to include hd-idle (perhaps with a small web interface) to the standard fon2300 firmware.

Well, usb hard disks seem to be picky on spin-down. I've got 2 of them, one spinning down automatically and one that is always on.
hd-idle has help with the later (i.e. spinning it down after 10 minutes), and it has worked without any problem on 2.3.6.0 . Today, I've upgraded to 2.3.6.1, and reinstalled hd-idle as well. As far as I can see now, it works smoothly again.
BTW, configuration is at /etc/config/hd-idle. You have to enable it in this file, after that:
/etc/init.d/hd-idle start /etc/init.d/hd-idle enable
opkg download was from http://downloads.openwrt.org/kamikaze/8.09.2/rb532/packages//hd-idle_20081006-1_mipsel.ipk

Hello Gladys,I really liked the drseess I bought from you By the way, I would like to try selling thru eBay and blogging too. Do you have some tips? thanks much.
Have you tested this hd-idle program and does it work for you?
Some disks / enclosures (such as the one I'm currently using) seem to do spindown automatically as well.
