Can you create a porting of dropbox, or a similar application, or a folder that interface itself with a dropbox account, in the fonera? Thanks in advance!

A quick glance at dropbox shows that they appear to have a GPL CLI client. However, closer inspection shows that only the nautilus file manager plugin is GPL, but it needs a closed source "dropbpoxd" component (which only seems to be built for x86 and x86_64, arm and mips support have been mentioned but aren't available as of yet).

So, dropbox is currently not really going to work for the Fonera. There also doesn't seem to be any reverse engineered alternative to dropboxd, but I haven't looked closely.

Do you know of any alternative services that do offer full open source clients?

No, no news yet. Please don't keep poking your tickets every now and then, that won't get things done faster. The Milestone field is a good indication of when we plan to get something done: No milestone means it will probably not be anytime soon. If you want to speed up a particular feature, feel free to provide patches. Otherwise, please be patient, we can't do magic...

Apparently, it is possible to use HTTP upload for files < 300MB. See this page for a simple python script that allows uploading files to dropbox and this blogpost about how to use that script on a Fonera (using OpenWRT and Optware).

This means that we could perhaps add support for dropbox to the existing uploader daemon (that now handles facebook / flickr). Getting complete support for mirroring a local directory on dropbox will probably not be possible (or at least not be feasible).

Since Python is a big install (too big for the built-in flash) this might also require an alternative script that does not need python.

So, it seems some dropbox integration is possible, but I can't promise anything about when we will look at this more closely. Patches are welcome, of course :-)

a native dropbox client could be a little challenging to be made running on the fonera.

if you have some webspace supporting php then it's possibly already:

now using a simple "cp" command is sufficient to copy files from your hdd connected to fonera to your dropbox (via your webspace).
